Hanging out on the WAYLT? board a lot keeps me listening to music. Reading all the posts from the good people there, with their diverse tastes got me thinking.

I was listening to The Grateful Dead Channel on Sirius (not a shock for those who know me) and I wrote a post about why I thought The Grateful Dead were the greatest American rock and roll band. They were able to fuse so many distinctly American forms of music (blues, jazz, country, etc) into a brand new sound. They almost single-handedly (for better or for worse) spawned an entirely new genre of music, jam bands (this is not to minimize the impact of bands like Quick Silver Messenger Service, Jefferson Airplane, etc).

But then I started thinking of all the great American bands, like The Beach Boys, The Eagles, Aerosmith, The Byrds, etc. and figured there was a serious debate to be had. This is the forum for that debate.

The Voting for Round 1 Has Officially Closed! No more votes will be accepted, but I don't expect that to be a problem, since nobody has voted in in days.

After much deliberation, the brackets have been set. I was unable to stick to my original idea of breaking the brackets up chronologically. There were too many 60s and 70s bands and not enough 90s and beyond bands to make it work. I used the total number of votes from the original poll to seed each band. More votes meant a higher seed. Your four #1 Seeds are The Doors (Keyboard Bracket), The Eagles (Guitar Bracket), Aerosmith (Bass Bracket), Van Halen (Drums Bracket).

As you can tell, I tried to keep bands from similar eras and genres together as much as possible, but the Bass bracket is quite diverse. Please vote for each match-up. The polls will be open for one week, starting Thursday Jan.22 and closing sometime on Wednesday, Jan. 28. Feel free to comment on each match-up. It's interesting to see why people vote the way they do.

The Polls Have Officially Closed. No more votes will accepted. 7:45 pm. Sunday, January 11, 2009.

I have tallied up the results from all of the top 10 lists. 103 bands were mentioned. Of those, 51 received only 1 votes. As a result, these bands were eliminated. It would be far too difficult to do a run off with these 51 groups, so my only other option is to go down to a bracket of 32 (I'm not dealing with the complications and headaches of bye weeks, etc. 32 in nice, neat, and easy). So to get down to 32, here is what I did:

There were 7 bands who received two votes They were eliminated. This brings us down to 45.

There were 9 bands that received 3 votes. That brings us down to 36. We're getting closer.

Firstly, I would like to thank everyone who contributed to the original blog post. There was sufficient interest to get the ball rolling. So here are the requirements:

1. Nominate 10 American Rock and Roll bands that you believe are worthy of being in the discussion of The Greatest American Rock and Roll Band. I know musical taste is subjective, but please keep the following in mind when nominating a band: musicianship, innovation, influence on other musicians/pop culture, popularity, and commercial success

2. Keep nominations to American Bands, no solo acts please. As it pertains to this contest, an American Band will be considered any band that has a minimum of 51% American-born musicians at the time the band was formed. In addition, the band needs to have been formed in the US. Any nomination of a band that does not meet this requirement will be invalidated. Nominations for bands like The E Street Band and The Heartbreakers will be accepted.

It's been a while since someone took the time and energy to get a NCAA-style bracket going, but I've been thinking about this one for a while. Now that fantasy football season is winding down I find myself with a little extra time on my hands (please don't tell my wife though). So if there is enough interest I will start a bracket right after the holidays. Please let me know what you think of the idea.
