Reading all the posts from the good people there, with their diverse tastes got me thinking. I was listening to The Grateful Dead Channel on Sirius (not a shock for those who know me) and I wrote a post about why I thought The Grateful Dead were the greatest American rock and roll band. They were able to fuse so many distinctly American forms of music (blues, jazz, country, etc) into a brand new sound. They almost single-handedly (for better or for worse) spawned an entirely new genre of music, jam bands (this is not to minimize the impact of bands like Quick Silver Messenger Service, Jefferson Airplane, etc). But then I started thinking of all the great American bands, like The Beach Boys, The Eagles, Aerosmith, The Byrds, etc. and figured there was a serious debate to be had.
